This time of year, I take a closer look at our internal project board—not just to reflect on everything we’ve accomplished, but also to revisit those big ideas still waiting for their moment to shine.
While 2024 has been filled with wins—big and small—I’ve realized that the list of ideas we’ve sidelined is longer than I’d like.
So, as we head into the new year, I’m shifting my energy and creativity toward bringing more of those sidelined ideas to life instead of adding a bunch of new ones. This week, I’ll share a simple formula I’m using to turn a couple of those sidelined ideas into big wins early in 2025, setting the stage for a strong and powerful start to the new year.
Who’s ready to join me in achieving an early win in 2025?
If you’re looking for an accountability partner, I’m happy to volunteer! Once we lay out the specifics, you’ll see that achieving a win can be simpler than it seems.
Here’s the formula:
1. TIME
You’ve heard it before, but it’s worth repeating: time is our most valuable asset. Start by figuring out, realistically, how much time you can dedicate to this project. Push yourself just a little further—set a goal that’s 30 minutes beyond your comfort zone—but keep it achievable. Remember, consistency beats overcommitment every time.
2. MONEY
Let’s face it, most impactful projects require some level of financial investment. Set aside a budget that you’re comfortable with. Whether it’s purchasing tools, outsourcing help, or upgrading resources, knowing your financial boundaries will set the stage for success.
3. PRIORITY
Look back at your unfinished business from 2024 and prioritize 3 to 5 high-impact items. These should fit the time and budget you’ve just outlined. The key here is realism—focus on what can genuinely be accomplished with the resources you have available.
4. SELECTION
From your shortlist, ask yourself: which project aligns best with your goals, offers the biggest return on time and money invested, and creates the most meaningful impact once completed? If you’re unsure, involve your team or even run a quick poll to help identify the one project that stands out. Collaboration not only helps with clarity but also builds excitement and buy-in.
5. PLANNING
Start with the finish line in mind—picture what “done” looks like and how good it will feel to get there. Break the project into clear milestones with actionable tasks, set realistic deadlines, and use tools like Trello to stay organized. Anticipate roadblocks (because let’s be honest, they happen) and plan around them. Most importantly, celebrate the small wins along the way—they’ll keep you motivated and make the journey just as rewarding as the destination!
6. EXECUTION
Get it on your calendar! Schedule your dedicated time early in the day and early in the week to leave room for adjustments if the unexpected happens. Track your progress, stick to your plan, and hold yourself accountable—whether through regular check-ins with a colleague, friend, or me to help keep you on track. Momentum thrives on consistency, so avoid making changes to your deliverables unless absolutely necessary.
7. CELEBRATION
Give yourself the credit you deserve for crossing the finish line. Whether it’s a small treat or a big celebration, acknowledging your win keeps motivation high. After celebrating, take time to reflect on what worked, what didn’t, and what you’d do differently next time—those insights will make future projects smoother and more impactful. And if things didn’t go as planned? Don’t beat yourself up. Reflect, learn, and use what you’ve gained to put a better plan in motion for February. Progress over perfection, always.
I’ve done my research, tested this formula myself, and can confidently say it works.
The best part? You can use this exact plan for personal projects just as easily as for business goals. Getting things done always feels great, but having a reliable formula gives you more than that—it provides comfort, confidence, and a clear starting point to refine, improve, and personalize it to suit your style.
And here’s a bonus trick: write down and keep a record of each step.
Seeing your progress in real time is incredibly motivating, and having that data gives you a valuable resource to reflect on and improve.
Got challenges or success stories to share? I’d love to hear them!
