Amidst hybrid work schedules, technological advancements, and generational shifts, the requisites for effective and efficient teamwork have significantly evolved compared to just a few years ago. This week, I’ll share 7 tips to adapt, thrive, and ensure the happiness of everyone on your team, including yourself.
Avoid Falling into the “Faster is Better” Trap
While technology has undoubtedly accelerated many processes, it’s important to recognize that faster isn’t always better. As technology conditions us to expect rapid results, we risk sacrificing the essential skill of patience. Encourage your team to prioritize quality and accuracy over speed. Providing them with the necessary space and opportunity to deliver high-quality outcomes leads to better results and fosters happier team members.
Default to Trust
In the past, there were inquiries from clients about implementing employee tracking software, which we used to kindly decline. Thankfully, this is no longer the norm. However, there’s more we can do to empower our teams through trust. Frequent progress check-ins, time-tracking systems, and strict policy enforcements can harm team morale and performance. Removing time-wasters, red tape, and unnecessary burdens encourages your team to take ownership of their responsibilities and lead to innovation. As one of my favorite business coaches always pointed out: having trust issues with your team is either a personal issue you must overcome or a skill to improve when hiring the right talent.
Make Decisions Swiftly
While it’s essential to learn from past mistakes, dwelling on “what ifs” serves no one. Decisions are made based on the information available at the time. Being decisive and supporting your team in choosing the best available option at any given time fosters progress. While some decisions may lead to lessons learned, indecision can cripple operations and spread throughout your team.
Encourage Curiosity
Learning occurs when stepping outside structural beliefs and daily routines. Some of the best discoveries stem from trying something new. Encouraging a healthy dose of curiosity among every team member unlocks their true potential.
Use Optimism Wisely
As business owners, optimism is ingrained in our nature. When utilized wisely, optimism can be a powerful tool against obstacles. However, unchecked positivity can hinder progress. Intentional positivity, coupled with action-oriented thinking, can drive resilience.
Maximize Team Meetings
Consider the value each team member brings to your business. If each member generates an average of $100 in value, a one-hour meeting with ten members equates to a $1,000 investment per hour. Ensure meetings are well-formatted, high-quality, and held only when necessary. However, never overlook the importance of fun and team-building activities in shaping your team culture. Never shy away from investing in your team.
Trick Your Brain
According to Michael Inzlicht, a social psychologist and neuroscientist at the University of Toronto, we, all humans, and in fact, all animals when given equal options, will take the easy way out. Understanding our innate tendency to choose the path of least resistance helps us stick to challenging options. By making the difficult option seem fun, educational, and interesting, we can overcome our brain’s inclination for ease.
