Are we ready to support Zoe and her friends for Girl Scout Cookie Weekend? I sure am! She’s not afraid and she’s ready to take the world by a storm. This week we’ll talk about why and how to support Zoe and the Girl Scouts. We’ll then add a little twist by serving up some helpful information on Internet cookies as well. All around, this will be a delicious newsletter with a purpose, which is often what I’m going for. Let’s dive in!
Did you know Girl Scouts is the biggest woman-led entrepreneurial program in the world? Supporting Zoe and her friends teaches them important life and leadership skills like creating budgets, keeping records, interacting with customers, and taking orders. In a world lacking support for women entrepreneurship, this is a big enough reason to go out there and buy some Girl Scout Cookies this weekend. Girl Scouts of America is also one of the most efficient non-profit programs out there. I recommend buying Girl Scout Cookies directly from a local Girl Scout as this helps them gain the most confidence. Here is how to find a local Girl Scout booth.
How about the cookies for your computer? Netscape developers wanted to figure out a way to have websites “remember” customers’ personal data and items of interest. Their hard work back in 1994 gave birth to Internet cookies, which are still in use as originally designed today. You are probably less interested in the history of cookies and more in if you should be concern about them. The short answer is: no. While cookies are always unique to the websites you visit, they can’t pass viruses or capture personal information from your computer. They simply allow websites to work more efficiently by recognizing and remembering certain information about you. Sometimes they instruct the website that you are already logged in, other times they make it display the last kitchen gadget you were looking at on the front page. You probably have thousands of them on your computer right now. Most websites rely on the use of cookies for their essential features. Thus, blocking or disabling cookies would greatly impact your experience on those websites and cause a lot of frustration, such as having to re-enter your login details each time you visit a website. The biggest concern with Internet cookies would be your privacy, as they do often track your browsing history. Should you choose to dump them regularly, here are the steps to do so for every browser. Fair warning: when you do clear the cookies, website visits will not remember anything about you and will prompt you to login again.
Whether we are talking about Girl Scouts or the Internet, both cookies serve a great purpose. As long as you brush your teeth and have good security software on your computer, cookies (in moderation) are a good thing!
Stay sweet until next week,
